About Me

Dr. James Hoeksema was born and raised in the suburbs of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Calvin College in 1980 and a doctorate in psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology in 1986. He and his wife, Cathy, have been married since 1981 and have two grown children.

He founded Hoeksema Psychological Services in Holland, Michigan, in 1999. Prior to that, he was employed as a staff psychologist at Holland Hospital’s Behavioral Health Services for about 10 years. He worked as a staff psychologist at Steelcase Employees Counseling Center for about two years. His first postdoctoral professional experience was as a staff psychologist at the State Prison of Southern Michigan for almost three years.

He is involved in the Holland community in a variety of ways. He is active at his church and consults with religious and nonprofit organizations. His hobbies include running, reading, hiking, traveling, and spending time with his wife.

“My life has been shaped and influenced by many individuals and experiences, including the foundation of faith and caring from my parents and family, the steadfast and expanding love from and with my wife, the most humbling but rewarding experience of parenting my two children, and numerous mentors and friends who have guided, supported and encouraged me,” Dr. Hoeksema said. “Most importantly, though, my faith in Christ has provided a compass for direction, a lens to see, a walking stick for support and protection, and a rich and abiding path to walk on the journey of life.”
